Basic Audio in Baltimore, MD | Local 19


This two-day course is designed to teach workers basic audio skills. Participants will learn basic live sound terminology, theories, principles, and common scenarios.

  • Basics of sound: sound as a wave function; inverse square law; sound sources; environmental effects on sound

  • Live sound signal flow overview: source to listener signal path; signal voltages at each gain stage; proper gain structure

  • Inputs: types of microphones; microphone pickup patterns; phantom power; direct inputs; instruments; digital inputs; formats and sample rates

  • Signal processing: preamps; EQ; compression; inserts/FX; busses, auxes, main outputs; zeroing console; saving and recalling scenes

  • Outputs: mains; monitors; in-ears; record feeds; broadcast/Zoom feeds; control room feed; headphones; Mix Minus; crossovers; power amps; passive speakers; powered/active speakers

  • Troubleshooting: feedback loops; linear troubleshooting; 50/50 troubleshooting; cable testing; speakers; networking basics
