Hazard Communication in Boston, MA | Local 481

This Hazard Communication Seminar & Practical will be led by United Scenic Artists Local USA 829 member and noted industrial hygienist Monona Rossol. The class is designed for people who are often first to arrive at a motion picture practical location including members in locations, construction, set dressing, and rigging to enable them to identify or question hazardous conditions on the work site in an appropriate manner so that work can proceed safely.

Specific goals include:

  • Promoting safe work environments by increasing skills to identify risks
  • Learning about remediation options for various hazards
  • Sharing perspective and increasing understanding across multiple departments.

The seminar is related specifically to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) hazard communication standard (1910.1200(h)), the technical training required for respiratory protection (1910.134(c)), other personal protective equipment, those provisions of the lead (1910.1025) and asbestos (1910.1001) standards that apply to work in old and abandoned buildings, general fall protection rules (1910.23) and review of common OSHA violations seen at film locations. The participants will pass a test demonstrating comprehension of the material and receive a certificate of completion.

An intensive practical exercise will follow the seminar. Monona will lead multi-department teams to investigate a practical location previously used in a motion picture production in the greater Boston area. Participants will apply learning, using hazard check-sheets to:

  • Identify and record potential hazards, (mold, ventilation issues, structural integrity, etc.)
  • Assess risk
  • Suggest remediation options, if applicable, or avoidance.

Each group will report findings back to the larger group and Monona to receive feedback.
