Mobile Elevating Work Platforms Operator

The trainee will gain the knowledge and skills required to achieve a credential (Genie wallet card) as a qualified operator of MEWP equipment, including mastlifts, scissorlifts, and boomlifts. This credential will satisfy OSHA's requirement that all operators of aerial work platforms receive documented operator training.

At the completion of training, the trainee will be able to:

  • Distinguish between Training, Familiarization, and Authorization.

  • Distinguish between the roles of Operator, Occupant, Supervisor, User, and Owner.

  • Be conversant with the ANSI A92 group of standards (A92.22 and A92.24).

  • Be conversant with OSHA's "General Duty Clause", as well as 1910 and 1926 regulations that relate to MEWP use.

  • Be able to accurately read Range-of-Motion charts for example boomlift models

  • Be acquainted with case studies of select MEWP injury/death cases.

  • Perform a worksite hazard assessment in any venue where work is performed.

  • Perform a walk-around visual inspection of the demonstrated MEWP equipment.

  • Perform a function test of the demonstrated MEWP equipment's features.

  • Know what to do if the worksite or equipment needs corrective action by employer.

  • Be acquainted with the IATSE Safety Hotline (844-IA-Aware).

  • Successfully complete a written evaluation (Genie exam) of training topics.

  • Successfully complete "hands-on" operation of demonstrated equipment.
