Boom Operator 101

This course is focused on the foundations and best practices for operating a boom in various conditions. The beginning portion is a brief classroom section discussing the overall scope of the job, best practices, and common challenges. Next, different equipment and their specialized use, proper holding of a boom pole, placement, strategies, and troubleshooting are covered.

Joel Reidy, IATSE Local 481

Location: Boston, MA

Joel Reidy is a Local 481 member who has worked in the film industry for nearly 30 years. He has primarily worked as a Boom Operator for his entire career and has worked on a wide variety of feature films, television shows, and commercials. Some recent projects on which he’s worked include Madame Web, Don’t Look Up, Free Guy, Salem’s Lot, Dexter: New Blood, Castle Rock (Seasons 1 & 2), Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, Central Intelligence, Black Mass, and The Equalizer. He is also an accomplished teacher, having taught this same class at Emerson College.
