Balloon Light Technician
This three-part course covers the fundamentals of balloon light/grip cloud construction, operation, and disassembly. Participants will learn how to safely build, operate, and disassemble lighting balloons and grip clouds of various designs, with the simpler balloons covered on day 1 (101), more complex balloons on day 2 (201), and grip clouds on day 3 (202). This course teaches the safe operation of balloon lighting as well as basic power distribution associated with said lighting. By learning how to operate light balloons and grip clouds, set lighting technicians and grips increase their skill set.

Glen Marc Shearer’s career as a Set Lighting Technician, Assistant Chief Lighting Technician, and Chief Lighting Technician began in 1999 at Stu Segal Productions in San Diego, California. He began operating light balloons in 2001. In 2003, he co-founded Skylight Balloon Lighting, Inc., of which he is the current President and CEO. He served as the inaugural Vice President of IATSE Local 495, San Diego’s Studio Mechanics Local, from approximately 2004-2005. 2005 was also the year he was sworn into IATSE Local 728, the Set Lighting Technician Local in Los Angeles, California. In 2010, he began teaching the Balloon Lighting Class for Local 728. Finally, in 2013, he opened Skylight Georgia Inc. in Decatur, Georgia.
