Theater Fly Systems and Rigging in Victoria, BC | Local 168


In a 3 day course across 3 venues with distinct fly systems, 12 students will learn the basics of fly system operation and theatre rigging. This course is aimed at workers new to fly system operations. Students will get instruction in their places of work, as well as actual hands-on experience flying loads within 3 different physical fly systems. Students will learn theatre rigging, with emphasis in difference from arena rigging.

  • Safely accessing the fly floor

  • Inspection of hemp system

  • Inspection of wooden battens

  • How to tie rope to wooden batten – clove hitch

  • Inspection and proper use of sandbag counterweights

  • Inspection of belay pins

  • Proper tie off of hemp rope on belay pins

  • Inspection and proper use of trim blocks

  • Inspection and proper use of Sundays

  • Safe raising and lowering of load on pin in hemp system
