Basic Millinery in New Orleans, LA | Local 478

This course covers basic care, handling, and repair of men’s and women’s hats for film and television. Participants will review hat materials and shapes, instruction on shaping and sizing of hats, hat repair, and reshaping. Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to identify different hat materials and shapes, understand general care and handling of hats and methods for reshaping, resizing and repairing hats.

  • Brief history of millinery

  • Review of types of hats

  • Description of hat blocks and their use (samples for handling)

  • Hat sizing

  • Hat repair for straw, felt, and fabric

  • Discussion of retrimming of hats with ribbon, feathers, and flowers

  • Discussion of aging of hats for film and television
