Rigging Math Fundamentals Online | Local 480


This four session virtual learning course is geared toward experienced entertainment riggers looking to review and sharpen the math skills outlined by the Entertainment Technician Certification Program. This course examines mathematical principles through real world scenarios broken down and examined step by step with visual examples and instructor prompted problem solving. At the conclusion of this course, participants will be able to identify the relevant mathematical principals and formulas and demonstrate their application in a variety of real world rigging scenarios. This course offers an excellent review of the rigging math skills necessary for success on ETCP Arena or Theatre Rigging Exams. Current ETCP certified technicians are eligible for 16 renewal credits for participation.

  • Basic Math Refresh - Order of Operations, Ratios, Algebra, Geometry and Trigonometry

  • Components of Force, Vectors

  • Design Factors - Working Load Limit, Breaking Strength, Efficiency

  • Pulley Math, D/d Ratio, Fleet Angles

  • Load Basics - Point, Uniform Distributed, Indeterminate, Static, Dynamic, Shock Load

  • Center of Gravity, Tilt a 2-point object • Loads on a Beam, Single, multiple, cantilevered

  • Multipoint Uniform Distributed Loads, equal point spacing, equal load sharing

  • Slings and Forces, Effective Length of Hitch, Breast-lines, Calculating Bridle leg length and Tension

  • Ground supported Structures

  • Team Problem solving challenge
