Introduction to Theatrical Carpentry is designed to provide technical knowledge for students new to the entertainment industry who wish to become professionals in Stagecraft. This course examines the world of the theater through instruction and hands-on performance. This training will focus on in-depth explanations and hands-on demonstrations of the physical theater, the theatrical shop, and the use on its systems.
The students will begin with classroom instruction focusing on proper terminology and an extensive discussion on the theater building and its parts, stage and stage direction, and theatrical systems and components. Next, we will systematically workshop proper load-in and load-out procedures and skills needed to keep set pieces and the theater functioning properly for the foreseeable future. Finally, we will introduce the students to the Scene Shop, discuss show set planning, and putting the plan into action. The students will work in groups to produce a project from planning, to shop drawings, to implementation and construction. We will work extensively on safe and proper techniques at each and every stage of the process.
