Chain Hanging 101

Learning targets for this course include:

  • Understand the responsibilities of the Down Rigger and Up Rigger

  • Understand the rigging symbols when marking out the floor

  • Demonstrate how to build a dead hang basket, Even and Uneven Bridels

  • Demonstrate how to tie the Bowline and Clove Hitch knots and understand when to use either

  • Understand the essential gear for the Down Rigger and Up Rigger

  • Demonstrate how to wear a harness properly

  • Demonstrate climbing, traversing, safely clipping in, different pulling techniques

  • Demonstrate making the basket on the beam and rope management

  • Demonstrate how to properly tie the rope onto the basket

  • Demonstrate how to safely send in a point

Justin Gamerl is a proud member of IATSE 927 in Atlanta, GA. Before transferring to the local chapter in 2018, Justin was touring the country with various productions. From Sesame Street to Dirty Dancing, his touring career has spanned the better part of the decade. Working in multiple departments on the road gave Justin a wider perspective on the entertainment industry. Settling into the role of Head Rigger/Head Carpenter, Justin finally found his comfort and confidence. This experience was a key factor in his transition off the road. Not only is he a freelance stage technician for various companies in the Atlanta area, but Justin is also an educator. Working in both public and private schools or programs, Justin uses his unique experience from the road and as a local stagehand in the classroom.
