Traditional wooden hat blocks are expensive and don’t always come in the shape or size needed for a specific hat/spec/scope of work. In this class, you will learn to create your own brim, crown, halo, or fascinator block from a specific kind of material that is light-weight and easily shaped. You will look at pros/cons of shapes and then work toward each person creating their own hat block design. At the end of the day, you’ll be able to block a high-end millinery straw over your block and learn finishing techniques for the hat/headpiece you’ve made from block to shaped straw. Hats will be finished after the workshop based on detailed handouts and demos provided in class.

Jan Wutkowski has been a practicing milliner since 1995 and has been teaching millinery since 1999. She studied millinery at the Melbourne (Australia) School of Millinery. Wutkowski has taught hat making at most art and craft institutions in the United States. She has also taught in the UK, Ireland, France, Australia, and Spain.
