Beginner Sewing in Richmond, VA | Local 487

This one day course covers basic hand sewing skills for the wardrobe worker. This course will begin with an overview of supplies and materials. The participants will then learn the correct method of applying a button, snaps, and hooks to a garment. The course will also cover various hand hemming techniques and an introduction to beading. Upon completing this course, members will have the knowledge of essential basic skills necessary to maintenance, alteration and repair of wardrobe.

  • Overview of materials and supplies

  • Sew a button

  • Sew a snap

  • Sew a hook & eye

  • Hemming: hemming stitch, blind stitch, cross stitch/catch stitch, basting

  • Swing tacks

  • How to sew a label

  • Introduction to beading: row of bugle beads, row of sequins, fish scale sequins, sequin fabric repair, bead dangle/fringe,miscellaneous decorative application
